Let’s take a closer look at the shooting and crime on campuses so we can get a better understanding of how these events affected everyone. The first shooting we should look at is the University of Texas shooting.
On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the University of Texas Tower with three rifles, two pistols, and a sawed-off shotgun. The 25-year-old architectural engineering major and ex-Marine—who had previously complained of searing headaches and depression—had already murdered his mother, Margaret, and his wife, Kathy, earlier that morning. He fired his first shots just before noon, aiming with chilling precision at pedestrians below
At that time there was no type of response team set up for anything like that, so it was a long way to get to Whitman and put an end to his terror. After the 96 minute long shooting two police officer climb their way up into the tower and ended Whitman’s life and stopping the shooting. With the aftermath of the shooting behind us the, law enforcement agencies across the states started to from S.W.A.T. teams (Special Weapons and Tactics) this was to be the answer to all shooting like this.
The creations of the swat teams was key in law enforcement everywhere, it was not just used for the college shooting. Swat is not used for many jobs in the law enforcement field, nor is it uses as a deterrent for crime. Swat is used as a tool, a means to an end. When you look at history of crimes on campuses you don’t hear about all the small things, you only hear and see the big things. Campuses have been subjected to violence’s and crimes as long as there been bad guys roaming this earth. The media plays a big role in what you hear and see.
